About
Our team organizes events and activities designed to engage and connect the Cambridge, MIT, and Kendall Square communities. We also work closely with our friends in MIT Admissions to manage the MIT Welcome Center.
The Kendall/MIT Open Space is…
A green, outdoor community space, free and open to all. We offer inclusive and eclectic programs, created in collaboration with our friends and neighbors in the Cambridge, Kendall Square, and MIT communities. The space features an outdoor movie area, a small stage, lots of benches, shade in the summertime, and moveable tables and chairs.
Our Roots
The open space is part of MIT’s Kendall Square Initiative, which involved a six-year regulatory process that featured hundreds of public hearings and community meetings, and the work of several MIT task forces and committees. These discussions examined topics such as the future of the East Campus area, the housing needs of the graduate student population, and the seamless integration of academic and commercial uses to create a vibrant gateway and destination.
Through this process, MIT made a commitment to create an accessible, active, and welcoming space for the Cambridge, MIT, and Kendall Square communities. That’s where we come in.
Before our outdoor space opened, our team presented programming around MIT’s campus. Learn more about these Pilot Programs.
