  • Since 1937, Community Art Center has served residents of the Port neighborhood in Cambridge, MA. The organization opened its doors to arts programs for children and youth in the neighborhood, so that they would have the same access to arts-rich experiences as children and youth in the more resourced communities of Cambridge. The Art Center became known as a space for young people to explore creative expression and build their narrative storytelling abilities. It came to provide a safe, validating home for young artists to refine their skills and hone their strong voices. Civic engagement and activism have always been a part of this story. In 1996, six teen girls at the Art Center decided they'd had enough of the lack of representation and misrepresentation they were seeing characterized in the media. They picked up cameras and began to tell their own stories, beginning Do It Your Damn Self!!, a film festival that is hyper-local, but with a national reach. It has now become the longest-running youth film festival in the country.
